Lesson 1 of 10

Why do people follow you?

The value you offer is why people follow, not how often you post.

People follow you for one reason: they expect to find something of value in their lives. It might be information that saves them time, an idea that changes how they see something, or a laugh on a tiring day.

The number of posts alone doesn't build an audience. What builds it is followers knowing what they'll find before they open your account.

Start with a simple question: who am I writing for? Describe that person precisely: their rough age, what occupies them, and what they've tried that didn't work. When you write for one specific person, your words get clearer, and everyone like them feels you're talking to them.

Consistency is the second half of the equation. Audiences trust people who show up on a predictable schedule, and three good posts a week beat ten posts in one week followed by a month of silence.

Finally, listen. Comments, messages and followers' questions are the best source of ideas: when several people ask the same question, that's your next post.

Before the next lesson, write a short description of your ideal follower. You'll need it in every lesson.
